Amazon Echo Show review: the smart speaker with a screen has great potential

The Guardian

The Amazon Echo Show takes the Alexa voice assistant and squeezes it into a cross between a digital photo frame, small TV and smart speaker for something that's more than just an interesting novelty. The Echo Show is effectively what you get if you took an Alexa-integrated Fire tablet, put a powerful speaker on the bottom and framed it with glossy black plastic. The result is a rather monolithic look. For such a small thing it looks fairly imposing, and has split opinion of visitors to my house 50:50 on whether it's attractive, but placed in a corner or on a shelf, it can easily blend in with the surroundings. In fact, when it's not actively doing something, the Echo Show can operate like a smart, internet-connected version of those digital photo frames that quickly went out of fashion.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is to make computers think like humans or that are as intelligent as humans. Thus, the ultimate goal of the research on this topic is to develop a machine that can simulate some human skills and to replace them with some activities.

Begun by the legendary and often demanding Stanley Kubrick and finished by the equally legendary Steven Spielberg, AI Artificial Intelligence is a futuristic retelling of the classic 1881 Florentine Italian tale Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Of course most modern children and adults are only familiar with the Disney animated rendition which can be considered a Readers Digest Condensed version of the original story. Kubrick is often demanding in that if he can't make it happen and appear the way he wants it, he will abandon an idea or even an entire project. For instance, since he could not use the available technology at the time, to recreate Stephen King's topiaries come to life in The Shining, he abandoned the idea to a daunting maze. Similarly, he felt he did not have the creative team necessary to replicate a robot boy so real that it is nearly human, not without using a human child actor, but because of ET and Jurassic Park, he did feel his friend Spielberg was up to the task. The ambitious result is one of the best science fiction films ever made, one which I believe stands shoulders to Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey.

5 reasons even smart TV users should own a streaming box

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

It seems like every TV these days is smart--it connects to the internet, and gives you access to premium apps like Netflix and HBO Now. It's almost impossible to find one that isn't, frankly. But while smart TVs have come a long way in the last five years, they're still not generally as fleshed out and user-friendly as a streaming box like the Roku, Fire TV Stick, or Apple TV. No matter how pricy your flashy new smart TV was, here are reasons to consider grabbing a streaming box. The number one reason to pick up a streaming device?

6 best media streaming devices to help ditch your cable bill

Boston Herald

With over-the-top television services like DirecTV Now, Playstation Vue, and Sling TV gaining popularity, the great unbundling is upon us -- and it's now easier than ever to dump your cable subscription for shows delivered via the Internet. But in order to watch your favorite online programs on a big screen, you'll probably need a streaming media device (unless you have a smart TV or a games console.) Improving all the time, these media streaming devices can connect you to everything from Amazon Video to YouTube TV, with apps and games added to the mix, too. One caveat: Even if you cancel cable TV, you'll still need to pay for Internet service to use these. Affordable and easy to use, the Amazon Fire TV can do a lot for your living room for little money.

Amazon's 40 Fire TV Stick Now Comes With the Power of Alexa

WIRED

Streaming sticks make it hard to justify buying a set-top box. Unless you want 4K video and CPU-intensive games, a dongle should do. With ample processing power, dual-band Wi-Fi, affordable prices, and grab-and-go portability, you'll see a lot of HDMI streaming sticks stuffing stockings this year. You press the mic button on the remote and speak into the top of it to summon Amazon's popular voice assistant. Add the updated Amazon Fire TV Stick to the list.

Gene Wilder Movies: How To Watch 'Willy Wonka,' 'Blazing Saddles' And Other Videos Online After Actor's Death

International Business Times

Gene Wilder, perhaps most well-known among millennials for his role as Willy Wonka, died Sunday in Connecticut after battling Alzheimer's disease, the Associated Press reported. News of his death Monday instantly triggered an outpouring of sympathy from celebrities like Russell Crowe and Gilbert Gottfried. Wilder's longtime collaborator Mel Brooks tweeted that he was "one of the truly great talents of our time," adding that "he blessed every film we did with his magic" and "blessed me with his friendship." Many film fans would argue Wilder blessed them with his performances, and thousands will almost certainly choose to honor Wilder by watching some of his most famous movies. Here's how you can join in: "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" is not available to stream on Netflix, but you can rent it on Amazon Video for 3.99 here.
